Kankakee Animal Hospital was established by Dr. Murry, Sr. in 1954. In those early days, the hospital was located on West Station Street in Kankakee.
After Dr. Gunning joined the practice, a new building was built at 2045 S. Schuyler Avenue in 1964. This is our current location. The practice has always specialized in small companion animals, primarily dogs and cats.
As the practice grew, Dr. Murry, Jr. joined the hospital in 1975. Dr. Beeman joined in 1989. Dr. Abrassart became a partner in 2004.
With the pending retirement of both Dr. Murry and Dr. Beeman, we welcomed Dr. Wierscham and Dr. Moeller to the staff in 2012. Dr. Opsal joined the practice in 2014 with the departure of Dr. Wierscham. Dr. Abrassart became the sole owner as of January 1, 2013.
Throughout the years, Kankakee Animal Hospital has maintained its tradition of providing the best veterinary care possible. We look forward to continuing this tradition with the help of dedicated, knowledgeable, and skilled staff.

Our kitten wellness program is designed to offer your new kitten all the benefits of veterinary services available to him or her from 6 weeks of age to 16 weeks of age. Included in this service is a series of examinations and vaccinations including rabies, panleukopenia (distemper), leukemia, etc. In addition, your kitten will be tested for worms and be treated for the most common intestinal worm of kittens – roundworms. Roundworms can cause your kitten to vomit and /or experience diarrhea; however, it is possible for your kitten to have roundworms and not show any signs of harboring the worms. A microscopic fecal examination will allow us to evaluate the presence of these worms. The examination will also look for other types of worms that can affect your kitten.

Yearly wellness exams are crucial for your pet's well-being. At this time the doctor will do a complete physical exam and administer any vaccines that are due, including rabies, distemper, lyme, and bordatella vaccines.
An annual heartworm test is recommended to check your pet for heartworm disease. Heartworm is carried by mosquitoes and even pets kept on prevention medications should be tested each year. A missed dose, a late dose, or medication failures can lead to a positive heartworm test. It is much easier to treat your pet in the very early stages of the disease than after it has progressed. Even if your dog is an "indoor" pet, he or she should be tested for heartworm. Your pet goes outdoors, even for short bathroom trips, and we all have been bitten by pesky mosquitoes who have found their way through the window or door screens. If they bite us, they can and will also bite your furry family members.
